Overview

Public health agencies in North America, Europe, and the Balkans continue to report West Nile virus activity. In the United States, the CDC has reported 813 human cases across 43 states. Los Angeles County continues to face a significant surge with 100 cases and five deaths, a volume officials note is comparable to levels seen in 2017 and represents the highest early-season count in nearly a decade.

New activity has been reported in other U.S. states. In North Carolina, a resident in Forsyth County has tested positive following mosquito detections in Forsyth, Cabarrus, and Mecklenburg counties. In Illinois, health officials confirmed the death of an 86-year-old man in Shelby County; the state has recorded 50 human cases and three deaths. In the Northeast, New Jersey has confirmed its first death of 2026, with 26 total cases reported statewide; 19 of these individuals experienced neurological illness. In New York City, human cases have already surpassed the 2025 total, with 23 cases confirmed as of September, 18 of which were identified as West Nile neuroinvasive disease.

In California, two sentinel chickens in Calaveras County tested positive on September 25, 2026. In Canada, CK Public Health confirmed the first positive virus identification in Tilbury on September 15. European activity remains high. In Spain, cases are rising in southern regions; Andalusia has confirmed 70 total cases and four deaths, including an 84-year-old man from La Puebla del Río. In Extremadura, the Servicio Extremeño de Salud reported 64 cases and two deaths so far in 2026, a significant increase from 2025. Other active areas include the Netherlands, Greece, North Macedonia, Romania, and Kosovo.
