West Nile virus surge in North America, Europe, and Cyprus

Overview

Public health agencies in North America, Europe, and Cyprus continue to report West Nile virus activity. In the United States, activity has expanded into the Southeast and Northeast. In the Atlanta metropolitan area, the Fulton County Board of Health reported positive virus detections in mosquito traps at several parks, including Roswell Area Park and Garrard Landing Park. DeKalb County has also reported infected vectors in areas such as Doraville and Clarkston, though no human cases have been confirmed in the Atlanta metro area.

In the Northeast, health officials in New York and Massachusetts have issued warnings due to rising cases and mosquito activity. In New York, confirmed human cases have been reported in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, and Westchester, with positive mosquito pools detected in the Bronx, Nassau, Suffolk, and several Hudson Valley counties. In Massachusetts, the Department of Public Health raised the risk level to moderate for 10 Berkshire communities following a sixth human case involving a man in his 70s who developed encephalitis.

In North Carolina, Mecklenburg County has confirmed three human cases, and in the Midwest, Cook County, Illinois, has confirmed four human cases.

European activity remains significant, with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control reporting 1,086 official infections across 15 countries. Italy has recorded the highest number of infections with 516 cases, followed by Greece with 284 and Spain with 88. In Cyprus, the health ministry confirmed four cases this summer, with Deputy Director Elizavet Constantinou stating the situation is “under control”.
