West Nile virus cases in the Netherlands reach 59 total
The West Nile virus outbreak in the Netherlands appears to be declining as the mosquito season ends. According to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), three new human cases were reported between October 1 and October 7, bringing the total number of infections this year to 59.
Ten deaths have been recorded this year, though officials note that the virus is not necessarily the sole cause of death; many of the deceased were elderly or had underlying health conditions. While most people experience no symptoms or mild flu-like symptoms, approximately 1 percent of infections can lead to potentially fatal neurological conditions such as meningitis.
In addition to human cases, the virus is affecting animals. The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) reported 13 new infections in horses last week, raising the annual total to 163. Furthermore, the number of infected birds has risen to 210. The virus is transmitted to humans and animals via mosquitoes that have fed on infected birds.
