West Nile virus cases rise in Andalusia and Extremadura

Health authorities in Spain are increasing surveillance following a rise in West Nile virus cases across Andalusia and Extremadura.

In Andalusia, the total number of affected individuals has reached 46. While most cases are mild, 14 patients have developed neuroinvasive complications, and one death has been recorded. Authorities have expanded preventive monitoring to nearly thirty municipalities, including Pulpí in Almería, as well as areas in Granada, Jaén, Málaga, and Cádiz. Health services are conducting extensive laboratory testing and blood donation screenings to manage the outbreak.

In Extremadura, the Servicio Extremeño de Salud (SES) confirmed six new cases in the towns of Don Benito and Santa Amalia. This brings the total number of cases in the region to 17 for the year. Six patients currently remain hospitalized.

In both regions, health officials have issued warnings to the public to prevent mosquito breeding by eliminating standing water in containers, pools, and gardens. Recommendations include using insect repellent, wearing light-colored clothing, and utilizing mosquito nets.
