West Nile virus cases rise in Andalusia and Extremadura
West Nile virus cases are rising across southern Spain. In Andalusia, health authorities have confirmed 70 total cases this summer, including a recent infection in Isla Mayor. The region has also recorded four deaths, the latest being an 84-year-old man from La Puebla del Río who suffered from a neuroinvasive form of the disease.
In the Extremadura region, the Servicio Extremeño de Salud (SES) reported two new cases involving a 61-year-old woman and an 81-year-old man. So far in 2026, Extremadura has documented 64 cases and two deaths, a significant increase compared to the 39 cases and five deaths reported in 2025.
Health officials have placed 23 Andalusian municipalities on alert, maintaining surveillance of mosquitoes, animals, and humans. Authorities recommend preventative measures such as using insect repellent, wearing light-colored long clothing, and eliminating standing water to prevent mosquito breeding.
