West Nile virus cases rise in Andalusia and Los Angeles County
West Nile virus outbreaks are being reported in both Spain and the United States. In Andalusia, Spain, health authorities confirmed a new human case in San Telmo, Cortegana, bringing the regional total for 2026 to 69 cases. Several municipalities in the province of Huelva, including Almonte, Beas, Gibraleón, Huelva capital, Moguer, and Palos de la Frontera, remain under alert status to reinforce entomological and human surveillance.
In Los Angeles County, USA, the Department of Public Health has reported 100 cases and five deaths so far this year. This represents the highest number of infections recorded this early in the mosquito season in nearly a decade, a surge attributed to atypical weather conditions. Many patients have required urgent hospitalization due to severe clinical symptoms affecting the brain or spinal cord. Officials noted that the current volume of cases is comparable to levels seen in 2017.
