West Nile virus cases rise in New Jersey and New York
Health officials in the Northeastern United States are reporting a rise in West Nile virus cases. In New Jersey, the Department of Health confirmed the first death of 2026, with 26 total cases reported statewide. Nineteen of these individuals experienced neurological illness, and 69% of cases involved people aged 60 and older. The highest concentrations of cases were noted in Monmouth, Mercer, and Camden counties.
In New York City, human West Nile virus cases in 2026 have already surpassed the total number recorded in all of 2025. As of September, the city confirmed 23 human cases, 18 of which were identified as West Nile neuroinvasive disease. Officials noted that more than 1,600 mosquito pools have tested positive for the virus this year, a record for the city.
Health experts warn that many infections may go unreported because mild or asymptomatic cases are less likely to be tested. Authorities urge residents to take preventative measures, such as using EPA-registered insect repellent, wearing long sleeves, and eliminating standing water around homes to reduce mosquito breeding sites.
