West Nile virus cases rise across Europe and the United States

West Nile virus is seeing increased activity across several regions, including Europe and the United States. In Belgium, health authorities have identified five probable human cases in the provinces of Antwerp and Flemish Brabant, with four of these individuals exhibiting neurological symptoms. One person has been hospitalized.

In France, Santé Publique France reported 56 human cases of the virus in mainland France as of September 6, 2026. Severe neurological complications have been noted in regions such as Haute-Garonne.

Romania has recorded 83 cases of the virus between June 3 and September 9, 2026, resulting in five deaths, primarily among elderly individuals with comorbidities. The highest number of cases was reported in Bucharest.

In the United States, Massachusetts health officials have raised the West Nile virus risk level to moderate for ten communities in Berkshire County following the confirmation of a seventh human case this season, including a case in Worcester County.
