West Nile virus cases rise to nine in Oristano province

The number of West Nile virus infections in the province of Oristano, Italy, has risen to nine cases. Health authorities from Asl 5 have launched epidemiological investigations and prophylaxis measures, including scheduled disinfestation in affected residential areas.

Among the confirmed cases, three individuals are currently hospitalized at the San Martino hospital in Oristano, including an 85-year-old woman, a 60-year-old man from Marrubiu, and a 78-year-old from Montiferru. Other patients have been treated and discharged. One fatality has been recorded involving a 90-year-old woman.

Local officials, including Marrubiu Mayor Luca Corrias, have activated emergency protocols to manage the outbreak. Health authorities are urging citizens, particularly the elderly and vulnerable populations, to take preventative measures such as using insect repellents, wearing long clothing when outdoors, installing mosquito nets, and avoiding standing water.
