Italy responds to Dengue and West Nile virus outbreaks

Multiple regions in Italy are responding to outbreaks of mosquito-borne illnesses, specifically Dengue and West Nile virus.

In Tuscany, authorities have ordered urgent mosquito disinfection in Piombino following two reported cases of Dengue. The interventions target areas near the local hospital and emergency room to prevent local transmission. Similarly, in Prato, disinfection measures are being implemented in Via Roma following a suspected Dengue case.

In Campania, the West Nile virus situation remains serious with 54 reported infections and 4 deaths recorded as of late August. The cases are concentrated in the provinces of Caserta and Naples. One 76-year-old woman in Aversa is currently in intensive care due to the virus. Local municipalities, including Capua and Aversa, have issued ordinances to prevent water stagnation to curb mosquito breeding.

In Catanzaro, local authorities have issued orders to control the Culex pipiens mosquito to combat West Nile, though some residents have raised concerns regarding the maintenance of public areas.
