West Nile virus deaths rise in the Netherlands

A fourth death has been recorded due to West Nile virus in the Netherlands. According to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), this specific individual was infected through a blood transfusion.

The blood donor, who originated from northern Utrecht, had previously been infected with the virus, though this was not detected at the time of donation. Upon the donor testing positive, the blood bank Sanquin blocked the blood to prevent further transmission and scheduled it for destruction. Other donors also tested positive, and their blood has been withheld from use.

The total number of confirmed cases in the country has risen to 28. While most infections occur via mosquito bites across various provinces including Utrecht, Gelderland, and Noord-Brabant, the RIVM estimates that several thousand people in the Netherlands may have contracted the virus. In the past week, the virus was also detected in 61 wild birds and 30 horses.
