West Nile virus detected in Atlanta parks and Charlotte residents

Health authorities in the Southeastern United States are responding to the detection of West Nile virus in both mosquito populations and humans.

In the Atlanta metropolitan area, the Fulton County Board of Health reported positive virus detections in mosquito traps at several parks, including Roswell Area Park and Garrard Landing Park. In response, Vector Disease Control International has initiated nocturnal spraying with fogger trucks in a quarter-mile radius around affected sites. DeKalb County has also reported infected vectors in areas such as Doraville and Clarkston. While mosquito activity is high, officials note that no human cases have been confirmed in the Atlanta metro area as of the latest reports.

In North Carolina, Mecklenburg County has confirmed three human cases of West Nile virus alongside the detection of infected mosquito pools. This follows earlier investigations into a case in Gaston County and a positive blood donor in Mecklenburg. Health officials noted that positive mosquito results in Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, and Forsyth counties appeared earlier in the summer than historically recorded. Authorities advise residents to take precautions against mosquito bites, particularly between dusk and dawn, noting that the virus is transmitted from birds to humans via mosquitoes and is not spread person-to-person.
