West Nile virus detected in Georgia mosquitoes and human case confirmed

West Nile virus activity has been detected in multiple regions of Georgia. In DeKalb County, health officials reported that seven mosquito surveillance traps tested positive for the virus between July 22 and August 17, 2026. Recent positive results include a trap in the 30329 ZIP code, which covers parts of Atlanta, Brookhaven, Chamblee, and North Druid Hills. As of August 18, no human cases have been reported in DeKalb County.

In Chatham County, the Coastal Health District confirmed its first human case of West Nile virus this year, marking Georgia’s second confirmed human case of 2026. While 80% of infected individuals show no symptoms, others may experience fever, headaches, body aches, or more severe neurological complications. Health officials recommend using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves, and draining standing water to reduce mosquito breeding and bites.
