West Nile virus cases and deaths rise in Romania and Greece
West Nile virus outbreaks are causing significant health concerns across Southeastern Europe. In Romania, the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) reported 95 cases and 5 deaths between June and September, with Bucharest recording the highest concentration of infections.
In Greece, the National Public Health Organization (EODY) has documented 370 domestic cases since the start of 2026. As of mid-September, 33 deaths have been attributed to the virus, particularly those involving central nervous system complications. Currently, 64 patients remain hospitalized in Greece, with 35 requiring intensive care or high-dependency units.
