West Nile Virus Study Shows Brain Defense, NY Health Dept Urges Mosquito Precautions
Scientists at Rockefeller University, led by Charles M. Rice, used 3‑D mouse models to map West Nile virus infection in the brain. They identified a signaling network that alerts brain endothelial cells within hours of peripheral infection, putting the central nervous system into a neuroprotective antiviral state before the virus crosses the blood‑brain barrier.
The New York State Department of Health warned residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites that can transmit West Nile virus and Eastern equine encephalitis. Since the virus was first detected in New York in 1999, the state has reported 569 human cases and 30 deaths. Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald emphasized, “Mosquitoes are not our friends. Preventing mosquito bites stops the nuisance itching and can prevent rare and potentially serious illnesses.” No specific treatment exists; care is supportive.
