West Nile virus surge prompts mosquito protection advice

A recent surge in West Nile virus cases has highlighted the importance of mosquito protection. According to the National Public Health Organization (EODY), the virus is primarily transmitted by common mosquitoes active from dusk until dawn, rather than tiger mosquitoes. While most infected individuals experience mild symptoms or no symptoms at all, less than 1% of cases can develop severe neurological diseases, such as encephalitis or meningitis.

Beyond commercial chemical repellents, several natural methods can serve as deterrents. Vinegar can be used directly on the skin or diluted in a spray to disorient mosquitoes with its acidity and scent. Additionally, strong aromas and certain household items can help; for instance, burning Greek coffee can act as a natural incense to repel insects in outdoor spaces.
