West Nile virus warning issued in the Netherlands

The GGD Hollands Midden has issued a warning regarding the West Nile virus in the Netherlands, noting that common house mosquitoes can transmit the virus. While the outbreak appears to have passed its peak, mosquitoes remain active during mild autumn weather.

According to the RIVM, 12 new cases were reported since late September, bringing the yearly total in the Netherlands to 56 infections and nine deaths. The virus is transmitted to humans, horses, and birds via mosquito bites after the insects feed on infected birds; it does not spread directly from person to person.

Most infections are asymptomatic, with 80 percent of people showing no symptoms and 20 percent experiencing mild, flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, or muscle pain. The GGD advises residents to prevent bites and notes that mosquito breeding often occurs in domestic settings like rain barrels or gutters.
