West Virginia Appeals FEMA Denial for Boone and Logan Disaster Aid
Governor Patrick Morrisey announced that West Virginia will appeal the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) decision to deny a major disaster declaration for Boone and Logan counties. The denial follows severe storms on June 22‑23, 2026 that caused extensive flooding, landslides and mudslides, damaging homes and infrastructure in the two counties.
FEMA had previously approved disaster declarations and $4.5 million in assistance for Upshaw and Lewis counties, and more recently approved requests for Ritchie and Pleasant counties. The West Virginia Emergency Management Division (WVEMD) has a 30‑day window, retroactive to the August 3 denial notice, to submit additional documentation, damage assessments and supplemental information for the appeal. Residents of Boone and Logan counties are urged to contact their local emergency‑management agencies for immediate assistance while the appeal proceeds.
