West Virginia flooding emergency
Entities: West Virginia National Guard · West Virginia · Patrick Morrisey · Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) · President Donald J. Trump
Overview
Late June 2026 saw a Flood Watch issued for southern West Virginia as rapid‑rise flood risks threatened major interstates. By mid‑July the storm system had produced flash floods, landslides and road closures across the state. Governor Patrick Morrisey declared a statewide emergency for all 55 counties, mobilised about 100 National Guard members with air‑ and water‑rescue assets, opened shelters and ordered an evacuation of Buckhannon. He also sought a Major Disaster Declaration for Boone and Logan counties, which had suffered severe June flooding that damaged hundreds of homes. No fatalities were reported, but property damage and utility outages persisted.
Severe storms on 21 July caused further flooding in multiple counties, washing out roads and cutting power. Morrisey reiterated the emergency, activated the National Guard for continued search‑and‑rescue and debris removal, and formally requested an expedited Major Disaster Declaration from the White House so FEMA can provide Individual Assistance, Public Assistance and hazard‑mitigation funding. The governor stressed that the disaster’s scale exceeds state and local capacities, making federal aid essential for restoring services, rebuilding homes and supporting affected businesses and families.
