Western allies pledge increased military aid to Ukraine amid Russian threats

Leaders of the ‘Coalition of the Ready’—led by the United Kingdom, France, and Germany—met in Kyiv to reaffirm their commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, dismissed recent threats from Russia as ‘scandalous’ and emphasized that Ukraine serves as the ‘first line that protects Europe.’

A key outcome of the discussions involves expanding Ukraine’s long-range strike capabilities. The British government has approved a request to develop long-range cruise missiles using British ‘Storm Shadow’ technology. This initiative involves the defense company MBDA, which has been authorized to share confidential information to help Ukraine and France establish local production of the French-British ‘SCALP’ missile.

The Kremlin has responded sharply to these developments, with spokesperson Dmitry Peskov accusing London of ‘adding fuel to the fire.’ Russia warned it would locate and destroy any production facilities established under this agreement.

In addition to military support, the coalition leaders prioritized strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses and securing its energy sector ahead of the upcoming winter. They also committed to further restricting Russia’s military funding through enhanced sanctions and measures to prevent the circumvention of existing economic restrictions.
