Western military support for Ukraine

In early August 2026, the UK Defense Secretary urged international allies to bolster Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. Warning that “winter in Ukraine is no longer a season. It is a weapon,” officials noted that Russia intended to target energy infrastructure to force a surrender. This call for support focused on addressing shortages of critical interceptors, such as US-made Patriot missiles, while Ukrainian officials advised citizens to prepare for potential power outages and extreme cold.

By late August, leaders from the ‘Coalition of the Ready’—including the United Kingdom, France, and Germany—met in Kyiv to reaffirm their commitment to Ukraine. The coalition moved to expand Ukraine’s long-range strike capabilities, with the British government approving the development of long-range cruise missiles using ‘Storm Shadow’ technology. This initiative aims to establish local production of the French-British ‘SCALP’ missile through cooperation with the defense company MBDA.

The Kremlin responded by accusing London of “adding fuel to the fire” and warned it would target any new production facilities. In addition to missile development, the coalition prioritized strengthening air defenses, securing the energy sector for winter, and enhancing sanctions to restrict Russian military funding.
