Western Greece implements climate resilience and flood protection plans

The Region of Western Greece is implementing a comprehensive strategy to enhance climate resilience and mitigate the impacts of extreme weather events. This includes active flood protection measures in Achaia, where crews are cleaning rivers, ravines, and small village streams. These efforts involve removing vegetation and debris to prepare for heavy rainfall, with specific attention given to areas affected by the 2025 wildfires.

Beyond immediate flood prevention, the regional administration is establishing long-term institutional frameworks. This includes the creation of a Climate Resilience Department within the Directorate of Environment, Climate Resilience, and Spatial Planning. The region has also approved a Regional Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change, which serves as a strategic roadmap for 12 economic sectors, including agriculture, tourism, and water resources. Additionally, a Regional Climate Change Observatory has been established to monitor and address vulnerabilities such as coastal erosion and water scarcity.
