Climate resilience and flood protection in Western Greece

Overview

The Region of Western Greece has initiated a multi-layered strategy to improve climate resilience and mitigate extreme weather impacts. This includes physical flood protection measures in Achaia, such as cleaning rivers, ravines, and streams to remove debris and vegetation, particularly in areas previously impacted by 2025 wildfires.

To support these efforts, the regional administration is developing long-term institutional frameworks, including a new Climate Resilience Department and a Regional Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change covering 12 economic sectors. A Regional Climate Change Observatory has also been established to monitor coastal erosion and water scarcity.

Complementing these regional efforts, the Municipality of West Achaia conducted a tabletop civil protection exercise based on the ‘Dardanus Plan’. The simulation focused on a potential overflow of the Peiros River in the Alissos and Lousika areas, testing the coordination between the police, fire service, and the National Center for Emergency Care (EKAB) to ensure an effective emergency response.
