Western Greece reports decrease in road accidents for H1 2026
According to data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), Western Greece experienced a decrease in road accidents and fatalities during the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025.
Between January and June 2026, a total of 220 accidents were recorded across the regional units of Aetolia-Acarnania, Achaia, and Ilia. These incidents resulted in 20 deaths and 261 injuries. This compares to 229 accidents, 22 deaths, and 290 injuries during the first half of 2025.
Regional breakdowns show varying trends. In Aetolia-Acarnania, 106 accidents occurred, resulting in 5 deaths, representing a 50% reduction in fatalities from the previous year. Achaia recorded 71 accidents and 9 deaths, an increase of three fatalities compared to 2025. In Ilia, 43 accidents were reported with 6 deaths, maintaining a stable fatality count from the prior year.
Monthly data indicates that June 2026 had the highest frequency of accidents with 51 incidents, while February saw the fewest with 23. January was the deadliest month with 7 fatalities, whereas June recorded the fewest deaths with only one.
