Greece road safety and traffic enforcement

Overview

In late August 2026, Greece reported various localized criminal and traffic incidents, including fatal accidents involving elderly pedestrians and arrests for driving under the influence in Athens, Agios Dimitrios, and Patras. By early September, Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis reported that intensified enforcement measures, including 1.7 million roadside alcohol checks during the first eight months of 2026, have contributed to a significant decrease in drunk driving. The percentage of drivers exceeding legal alcohol limits fell to 0.7%, down from 2.7% in the previous year. The Minister attributed improvements in road safety, including a reduction in fatalities and injuries, to increased police activity and the new Road Traffic Code.

Data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) supports a downward trend in certain regions. In Western Greece, the first half of 2026 saw 220 accidents resulting in 20 deaths and 261 injuries, compared to 229 accidents, 22 deaths, and 290 injuries during the same period in 2025. Specifically, Aetolia-Acarnania saw a 50% reduction in fatalities, though Achaia reported an increase of three deaths compared to 2025.

Conversely, the Thessaly Regional Police Directorate reported an increase in road accidents during August 2026, with 23 accidents and 29 casualties, including three deaths, compared to 17 accidents in August 2025. During this period, police conducted over 44,000 inspections in the region, identifying nearly 10,000 violations, primarily for speeding and helmet non-compliance.

Despite statistical shifts, fatal incidents persist. In the Kechries Gulf, a collision between a 50-meter Malta-flagged vessel and a fishing boat killed a 74-year-old man. Additionally, a 27-year-old man died on September 6 following a nightclub dispute in Giannitsa, after allegedly being struck during a confrontation on Plástira Street.
