Australia unemployment rate hits five-year high of 4.7%

Australia's labor market showed significant cooling in September, with employment falling by 39,300 jobs, a sharp reversal from previous gains. This decline was driven entirely by a loss of 73,700 part-time positions, while full-time employment saw an increase of 34,400. Consequently, the national unemployment rate rose to 4.7 per cent, a five-year high.

The unexpected weakness in the jobs data has shifted market sentiment regarding monetary policy. Expectations for a Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) interest rate hike in November have decreased significantly, with some market pricing for a hike falling from 35% to below 20% following the announcement.

In related economic news, the RBA's annual report revealed that Governor Michele Bullock received a total remuneration of $1,223,465 for the last financial year. Additionally, the Western Sydney Aerotropolis continues to see growth, with $34.6 billion in private investment committed to the region as the Western Sydney International Airport begins operations.
