Western Sydney International Airport reaches cargo and transit milestones

The Western Sydney International Airport is reaching major operational milestones. The airport's cargo section officially commenced operations on July 24, preceding the scheduled start of passenger flights on October 25. The 733,000 square meter cargo precinct operates 24 hours a day and is designed to handle up to 1.8 million tonnes of air freight annually in the future, with an initial capacity of approximately 250,000 tonnes.

In parallel, infrastructure for airport connectivity is advancing with the arrival of the first of twelve automated Siemens Mobility metro trains in Australia. These three-car trains, based on the Inspiro platform, are destined for the 23-kilometer Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport line. The driverless trains will undergo testing at the Orchard Hills maintenance center before moving to the main line. The metro service aims to connect Greater Western Sydney directly to the new international airport.
