Western U.S. Drought Heightens Wildfire and Water Crisis
A severe drought has left snowpack across the Rockies, Cascades and Sierra Nevada at less than half of normal levels, reducing runoff that supplies rivers, hydroelectric dams, irrigation and municipal drinking water. Experts say the deficit threatens wildfire intensity, agricultural water allocations, salmon runs and cheap clean electricity for many western states. The National Interagency Fire Center’s outlook shows above‑normal fire risk spreading across the West by early summer, and recent large fires in Nebraska have already burned hundreds of thousands of acres.
Scientists and commentators stress that climate change, not forest density, is the primary driver of the expanding fire season. Long‑term warming, higher temperatures, low humidity and stronger winds have made drought conditions more common since the 1980s, echoing historic dry periods such as the Dust Bowl era. While some advocate increased logging or prescribed burns, the prevailing view among many researchers is that the new climatic regime, rather than fuel loads, dictates fire behavior.
State agencies are preparing for water shortages, potential cuts to river allocations and heightened wildfire preparedness as the region heads into the hottest months of the year.
