Westinghouse begins engineering study for Slovak nuclear project

Westinghouse Electric Company has commenced a six-month Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) study for the potential deployment of an AP1000 reactor at the Jaslovské Bohunice Nuclear Power Plant in Slovakia.

The project is being conducted for Jadrová energetická spoločnosť Slovenska (JESS), a subsidiary of the state-owned company JAVYS. The study is partially funded by a grant from the United States Department of State’s Foundational Infrastructure for Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology (FIRST) program.

This technical phase aims to assess site suitability, advance licensing processes, and develop detailed project documentation, including preliminary schedules and budgets. The initiative is part of Slovakia’s strategy to enhance energy independence and reduce reliance on external energy sources. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico noted that the project aims to build the new plant under the exclusive state ownership of the Slovak Republic.
