Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear projects in Central Europe

Overview

Westinghouse Electric Company has initiated a six month Front-End Engineering and Design study for the potential deployment of an AP1000 reactor at the Jaslovské Bohunice Nuclear Power Plant in Slovakia. This study, conducted for Jadrová energetická spoločnosť Slovenska, is partially funded by a grant from the United States Department of State. The project is intended to support Slovakia’s energy independence strategy under state ownership.

In a related development, the Czech company Škoda JS has begun a two year preparatory phase to manufacture components for the Westinghouse AP1000 reactor. This includes producing reactor internals and pressure vessel covers to align production with ASME standards. Following its recent acquisition of ASME Section III certification, Škoda JS aims to integrate into Westinghouse’s international supply chain for AP1000 projects in Europe and the United States.
