Westnetz warns of potential gas shortages for large customers

Westnetz, a subsidiary of E.ON, has begun contacting large-scale gas customers to request updated emergency contact information. The company warned that a combination of weather-related, economic, and political factors could lead to gas supply bottlenecks during the winter.

This move marks a return to crisis preparedness protocols that had been paused after the lifting of the gas alarm level following the initial energy crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine. In response to the potential for shortages, some industrial companies are reportedly preparing legal protective statements to argue for the necessity of uninterrupted gas supplies to maintain production.

While some energy-intensive corporations, such as BASF, expressed confidence due to long-term supply contracts, others, including Covestro, noted a perceived risk to gas supply over the winter months.
