Wetland conservation initiatives launched in Chile and Peru

Various regional initiatives are underway to protect and enhance urban wetland ecosystems. In Puerto Octay, Chile, work is set to begin on the Villa El Lago Wetland Interpretive Walkway project. Funded by a $250 million investment from the Ministry of Housing and Urbanism, the project covers 2,676 square meters and includes elevated walkways, observatories, lighting, and recreational areas designed to allow community access while preserving the habitat of local flora and fauna.

In Nuevo Chimbote, Peru, the local municipality has launched the ‘Guardians of the Villa María Wetlands’ program. This initiative aims to strengthen environmental awareness and community participation to combat threats such as improper waste disposal, water pollution, fires, and informal land occupation. Scheduled to run through December 2026, the program will involve students, teachers, and local organizations in environmental education and conservation efforts.
