Environmental and water management in Peru and Chile
Overview
In August 2026, Peru and Chile implemented various administrative and environmental measures. In Peru, Juan Carlos Castro Vargas was appointed head of the National Water Authority (ANA) under an emergency decree allocating S/179 million for riverbed and ravine desiltation. Simultaneously, Chile named lawyer Emanuel Ibarra Soto as the new Superintendent of the Environment.
Following these leadership changes, regional conservation efforts were highlighted. In Chile, the Ministry of Housing and Urbanism initiated a $250 million project in Puerto Octay to develop the Villa El Lago Wetland Interpretive Walkway, featuring observatories and elevated walkways. In Peru, the municipality of Nuevo Chimbote launched the ‘Guardians of the Villa María Wetlands’ program, an initiative focused on environmental education and community participation to mitigate pollution, fires, and informal land occupation through December 2026.
