WhatsApp introduces AI content labels for channel media
WhatsApp has begun deploying a new feature designed to warn users when images, videos, or multimedia files posted in a channel have been generated or modified using artificial intelligence. This tool aims to combat misinformation and increase transparency regarding hyper-realistic synthetic content.
Channel administrators can manually apply an ‘AI content label’ by long-pressing a multimedia message. Once applied, the label appears permanently in the bottom left corner of the post and cannot be removed. This requirement applies regardless of the AI engine used, including ChatGPT, Gemini, or Midjourney.
In addition to manual labeling, the application is evaluating automatic detection mechanisms to recognize metadata and specific patterns in synthetic files. This development follows increasing international regulatory pressure for the clear identification of synthetic content to protect consumers from manipulation.
