WhatsApp AI-generated content labeling implementation
Overview
WhatsApp is implementing a feature to label AI-generated images and videos within channel updates to increase transparency and combat misinformation.
Initially appearing in an Android beta, the tool allows channel administrators to manually apply an ‘AI content label’ by long-pressing a multimedia post. This label remains permanently on the message bubble. The feature is tool-agnostic, applying to content created via Meta AI, ChatGPT, Gemini, Midjourney, or other systems, though text messages remain exempt.
As the feature rolls out, WhatsApp is also evaluating automatic detection mechanisms to identify synthetic files through metadata and specific patterns. The development is intended to help the platform comply with international regulatory pressures regarding the disclosure of hyper-realistic synthetic media.
The rollout has expanded to iOS, with testing currently underway for select beta users via TestFlight on version 26.34.10.70. On iOS, administrators can apply the label through the update’s context menu. Once confirmed, the label is visible to all users, including other administrators, and cannot be removed. This expansion follows the Android deployment and continues the platform's effort to meet legal requirements regarding AI disclosure across various jurisdictions.
