WhatsApp security alert: zero-click attacks target Apple users

The Italian State Police have issued an alert regarding a new wave of WhatsApp account compromises utilizing “zero-click” attacks. These vulnerabilities specifically target outdated versions of iOS and WhatsApp on Apple devices, allowing criminals to gain access without requiring any user interaction.

Once an account is compromised, attackers impersonate the victim to contact friends and family, often fabricating emergency situations to solicit urgent money transfers. To mitigate these risks, authorities recommend keeping operating systems and applications updated, enabling two-step verification, and regularly checking the “Linked Devices” section in WhatsApp to disconnect unrecognized sessions.

Apple has released security updates to address these vulnerabilities and advises users to install the latest versions and utilize two-factor authentication for Apple Accounts.
