White House Issues Executive Order on AI-Driven Cybersecurity Threats

On June 2 2026 the White House issued an Executive Order titled “Promoting Advanced Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Security.” The order targets frontier AI systems such as Anthropic’s Mythos and OpenAI’s 5.5 Cyber, which are believed to be dramatically more capable and could be used by bad actors to discover and exploit software vulnerabilities at unprecedented speed.

The order directs federal agencies—including the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense and the Treasury—to prioritize cyber defense of national‑security systems and critical infrastructure, issue binding operational directives, and expand AI‑enabled cyber‑defense tools for state, local and private‑sector operators. It establishes a voluntary framework with frontier‑AI labs to create an AI Cybersecurity Clearinghouse that will collect vulnerability information, share it with hospitals, banks, utilities and other essential services, and give the government up to 30 days of pre‑release access to new models for assessment. The order also calls for increased funding for cybersecurity research and instructs the Attorney General to prioritize prosecution of AI‑enabled cybercrime. It does not create new regulations, licensing or compliance requirements, and it does not supersede existing rules such as HIPAA.
