White Shark 'Contender' Emits Signal After Months, Heading Toward US East Coast

A satellite‑tracked great white shark known as “Contender,” weighing about 770 kg and measuring over four metres, re‑established contact on 10 July after several months of silence. The animal was tagged by the research group OCEarch near the coast of Georgia in January 2026. The lone signal indicates the shark briefly surfaced before diving again, suggesting it is continuing its seasonal northward migration in the Atlantic. Scientists project that Contender may reach Cape Cod, Massachusetts, a popular summer destination, but say the presence does not pose an immediate risk to beachgoers. Ongoing tracking aims to improve understanding of white‑shark migration routes and feeding habitats.
