Atlantic great white shark migration continues

Research teams continue to monitor the Atlantic’s largest recorded male great‑white shark, nicknamed “Contender.” After a weak “Z‑ping” on 7 July 2026 near the Outer Banks confirmed the 4.2‑m, 750‑kg predator was alive, a stronger dorsal‑fin signal on 10 July placed it off the North Carolina coast. The detection follows the last confirmed position on 23 April and confirms the shark’s northward migration toward the seal‑rich waters of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and potentially the Atlantic coast of Canada. Since its initial tagging near Florida in early 2025, Contender has traveled more than 11 000 km, moving through the Outer Banks and Pamlico Sound in April 2026 before heading further north. OCEARCH and local authorities continue to advise beach‑goers to swim in groups, avoid dusk or night swimming, and follow lifeguard instructions.

A July 19 “Z‑ping” indicated the shark was near the U.S. East Coast, reinforcing its progression toward summer swimming areas such as Cape Cod. A later report on 27 July noted the re‑established contact on 10 July after months of silence, highlighting tag‑dependency on surface events and underscoring ongoing efforts to map migration routes. The same OCEARCH data also recorded three additional great‑white sharks—Cross, Ripple and Bella—in the Gulf of St‑Lawrence, indicating a broader north‑western Atlantic presence during the summer.
