White storks begin seasonal migration assemblies across Europe

White storks across Europe, particularly in Poland and Germany, are beginning to gather in large groups, known as stork assemblies, in preparation for their annual migration. In Poland, these gatherings occur on meadows and river valleys, such as the Nida river, where birds feed and rest to build energy for a journey that can span up to 12,000 km. Ornithologists note that young birds use these gatherings to learn migration routes by following experienced leaders and observing landmarks like rivers and buildings.

While many storks traditionally migrate to Africa—including countries such as Egypt, Uganda, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Sudan—some are increasingly shortening their journey by wintering in Europe, often foraging near landfills. In Germany, significant sightings have been reported in Völklingen, where storks have been observed congregating on church roofs and school buildings. The migration typically involves birds traveling 150 to 250 km per day, utilizing warm air currents to soar southward.
