In Saarland, the population reached a record high with 60 breeding pairs and 115 fledged young. Experts note that many storks are now western migrants, wintering in France or Spain rather than Africa, which allows them to arrive at breeding grounds in better physical condition. In Grafschaft Bentheim, the Tierpark Nordhorn reported 74 successfully fledged wild young storks.

As the migration season begins, storks in Poland and Germany are forming large assemblies in meadows and river valleys to build energy. While many still travel up to 12,000 km to Africa, others are increasingly congregating near urban areas or landfills to shorten their journeys. To study these shifts, researchers at Affenberg Salem have begun banding and equipping young storks with ring transmitters to track their changing routes.
