WHO and DRC Open 100‑Bed Ebola Treatment Centre in Bunia

On 1 June 2026, the World Health Organization handed over a 100‑bed Ebola treatment centre it built to the Democratic Republic of Congo’s health authorities in Bunia, Ituri province, as part of the response to the country’s 17th outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain.

WHO Director‑General Tedros Ghebreyesus visited the facility, noted early patient recoveries, and urged stronger community mobilisation, dignified funerals, prompt reporting of suspected cases, and coordinated international aid while warning against travel or trade restrictions. He quoted: "We agree that stopping this epidemic relies on communities," and highlighted a six‑month, $518 million joint WHO‑Africa CDC plan to support early detection and control across affected African nations.

The centre is intended to boost diagnostic capacity and patient care, complementing national and regional response efforts amid ongoing insecurity, food insecurity, and displacement in eastern DRC.
