WHO chief hails Brazil's SUS as model for global health

World Health Organization Director‑General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Brazil’s Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) is a unique health‑care network that other countries can learn from. He praised the system’s universal access and highlighted the role of Brazil’s public research institute Fiocruz in producing millions of vaccine doses, which helped address equity gaps seen during the COVID‑19 pandemic.

Tedros also noted Brazil’s leadership in the negotiations of the pandemic treaty (the PABs annex) together with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, describing the country’s contributions as vital for preventing future health crises. While speaking, he referenced ongoing challenges such as the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and warned that cuts to international health financing could jeopardise progress toward global goals like ending the HIV epidemic by 2030.
