WHO praise of Brazil's SUS
Overview
In late July 2026 WHO Director‑General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus visited Brazil and repeatedly highlighted the country's universal health system, the Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS), as a global model. During a ceremony at Rio de Janeiro’s Hospital Federal do Andaraí, he praised SUS’s ability to provide universal care to over 200 million people and lauded Brazil’s partnership with the public research institute Fiocruz, which has produced millions of vaccine doses and contributed to the pandemic treaty negotiations.
Tedros also used the platform to warn that proposed cuts to WHO funding – notably by the United States – could jeopardize progress on key health goals, including the fight against Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the ambition to end the HIV epidemic by 2030. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva cited his own cancer treatment through SUS as evidence of the system’s reach, while the visit coincided with the International AIDS/HIV conference in Rio.
Overall, the brief series of statements underscored Brazil’s role in advancing universal health access, its contributions to global health research and treaty work, and the broader concerns about financing that could affect worldwide health initiatives.
