WHO issues first clinical guidelines for Ebola and Marburg viruses
The World Health Organization released its first comprehensive clinical management guidelines for filoviruses, covering Ebola (including Sudan, Bundibugyo and other strains) and Marburg. Published in June 2026, the document provides detailed recommendations for early diagnosis, fluid replacement, shock treatment, infection‑control measures and care of co‑infections, emphasizing that supportive care remains the mainstay because approved vaccines or specific antivirals are lacking for several strains.
The guidelines were prompted by an ongoing Bundibugyo outbreak reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. European health authorities, such as the ECDC, have prepared parallel operational guidance, stating that the risk of transmission to the general EU/EEA population is very low but stressing the need for rapid triage, isolation and protection of health‑care workers.
The new framework aims to improve patient outcomes and readiness across health systems worldwide.
