Nepal flood relief: India and WHO deploy aid and rescue teams
Devastating flash floods in Nepal have caused widespread destruction, resulting in over 500 deaths and leaving thousands missing. The disaster has severely impacted settlements, roads, bridges, and hydropower infrastructure.
In response, India has delivered 57.5 tonnes of humanitarian aid through three military airlifts and deployed an 11-member specialist team consisting of medical personnel and tunnel rescue experts. This team is tasked with assessing and conducting rescue operations at a hydroelectric project where workers are feared trapped. Nepal has also requested assistance from China to help construct 42 Bailey bridges to restore transport services.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has scaled up its response by releasing $150,000 in immediate emergency funding. The WHO has also deployed health supplies designed to support approximately 10,000 people for three months, including tents, masks, and sanitizers, while coordinating with the Nepalese government to restore disrupted health services.
Additionally, the U.S. State Department has reported that approximately 90 Americans remain unaccounted for in the Nepal-China border region, though five U.S. citizens have reached safety.
