WHO health support and response in Ghana

Overview

The World Health Organization (WHO) has engaged in various health support initiatives in Ghana, ranging from long-term surveillance infrastructure to immediate disaster relief.

In early August, the WHO Regional Office for Africa donated 205 laptops to the Ghana Health Service. Valued at over GHS 3 million, this equipment was provided under the Pandemic Fund Project to modernize disease surveillance and enable real-time data collection using Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) software. The goal is to improve detection and response to threats such as malaria, Lassa fever, and COVID-19.

By late August, the WHO shifted focus to emergency humanitarian aid following major flooding in the Greater Accra Region. To mitigate risks of water-borne diseases like cholera and malaria, the organization delivered six Interagency Emergency Health Kits and 600 cholera Rapid Diagnostic Tests to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO). The floods in the region reportedly affected over 38,000 people and displaced more than 7,700 households.
