The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported encouraging signs in the containment of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, though officials warn the epidemic is far from over. While transmission rates are declining in the heavily affected Ituri province, the virus remains highly active in other regions.

In North Kivu, the situation remains critical, with weekly deaths nearly doubling from 100 to over 200 in a recent two-week period. The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo species, has resulted in over 7,200 confirmed cases and more than 3,500 deaths across seven provinces as of mid-September 2026.

Health experts, including Africa CDC’s Placide Mbala and DRC’s Jean-Jacques Muyembe, noted improvements in community cooperation and a reduction in violence against health centers in some areas. However, challenges remain, including difficult terrain, poor road conditions, and the need for more robust contact tracing. Clinical trials to test vaccine effectiveness against the Bundibugyo variant are expected to commence in the coming weeks.
