DRC Ebola outbreak prompts WHO to call for Ervebo vaccine trial
World Health Organization experts have recommended a full‑scale human trial of the licensed Ervebo vaccine to assess whether it can protect against the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus that is fueling the current outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The outbreak has surpassed 4,000 confirmed cases, with 1,850 deaths recorded.
Ervebo, the only Ebola vaccine approved for the Zaire strain, showed promising results in animal studies: three of four non‑human primates survived and a research‑grade version protected all ferrets tested. WHO’s technical advisory group found no safety concerns and suggested a ring‑vaccination trial that would vaccinate contacts of confirmed cases in a randomized phase‑3 design. WHO Director‑General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called the findings “good news” but warned the virus is spreading faster than response efforts can keep up. The outbreak was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 16 May 2026.
