Whole-grain bread provides essential nutrients and energy

Dietician Adrienn Szabó from Semmelweis University emphasizes the nutritional value of high-quality, whole-grain bread, challenging the misconception that bread is inherently unhealthy or solely responsible for weight gain.

Whole-grain bread provides essential macronutrients and micronutrients, including fiber, protein, B vitamins (such as thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, and folate), magnesium, iron, zinc, and selenium. It also contains bioactive plant compounds like phenols, lignans, and phytosterols, which offer antioxidant effects and assist in regulating inflammatory metabolic processes and cholesterol metabolism.

Experts note that carbohydrates are a fundamental energy source, and international recommendations suggest they should account for 40–60 percent of daily energy needs. Weight gain is attributed to excessive total calorie intake rather than carbohydrates alone, noting that excessive fat consumption is often a more prevalent issue in certain populations. For optimal health, consumers are encouraged to seek additive-free, high whole-grain content varieties.
