WIBOR transition poses massive financial risk to Poland

Experts and financial institutes are warning of significant economic risks associated with the potential legal challenging of the WIBOR reference rate in Poland. According to the Sobieski Institute, worst-case scenarios involving disputes over WIBOR-based loans could cost the banking sector approximately 284 billion PLN, a sum comparable to the total capital of many banks, potentially leading to institutional failures and wider economic instability.

Further analysis from the Warsaw Institute of Banking suggests even higher costs. Estimates indicate that challenging the rate could cost the economy between 300 and 350 billion PLN. When including consumer loans based on various WIBOR rates issued between 2004 and 2026, total costs could approach 460 billion PLN.

To address the transition, banks will begin using the new POLSTR reference rate for loan agreements starting January 1, 2027. The WIBOR rate is expected to be phased out completely from the Polish financial system by the end of December 2036.
